Saint Andrei Șaguna (born Anastasie, 20 December 1808 [1 January 1809, Gregorian] – 16/28 June 1873) was of Aromanian origin. He studied at Miskolc and Pest, completing Philosophy and Law at the University of Pest (1826–1829) and Theology at the Orthodox Seminary in Vârșeț (1829–1832).
After his studies, he joined Hopovo Monastery, taking the monastic name Andrei (24 October 1833) and was ordained hierodeacon (February 1834). He later became professor at the Theological Seminary in Karlowitz, secretary of the Archdiocesan Consistory, hieromonk (1837), protopresbyter, and administrator of several monasteries.
In 1846, he was appointed vicar general of the Diocese of Transylvania in Sibiu, elected bishop on 2 December 1847, and consecrated in 1848. On 12/24 December 1864, he became Archbishop and Metropolitan of the re-established Metropolis of Transylvania, with residence in Sibiu.
