Saint Prophet Elijah, son of Sovah, came from the city of Tesva in Gilead, beyond the Jordan. He lived over 800 years before the incarnation of the Savior, during the reign of King Ahab, who married Jezebel from Sidon, a Phoenician and a worshiper of Baal.

King Ahab abandoned the faith of the Israelites and became an idolater. He persecuted the defenders of the true faith. Then Saint Elijah rose and came to the king’s court. He rebuked him for his apostasy and foretold that a great famine would strike the land, lasting three years and six months.

After this period, Saint Elijah returned to Ahab. On Mount Carmel, he offered a sacrifice. God sent fire from heaven upon the offering, thus proving that the faith he defended was the true one.

The people witnessed the miracle of fire from heaven. They seized the servants of Baal and put them to death. Saint Elijah performed other miracles as well: he resurrected the widow’s son in Zarephath of Sidon, parted the waters of the Jordan, and spoke with God on Mount Horeb.

By the will of the Lord, Saint Elijah was taken up to heaven in his body, without experiencing death. He will return to earth at the end of times, rebuke the Antichrist, be killed by him, and then be resurrected by our Lord Jesus Christ.
