Embroidered epigonation with Saints Adrian and Natalia, Epigonations

Saint Adrian and his wife Natalia lived in the city of Nicomedia during the reign of Emperor Maximian. During Maximian’s second inspection of his empire, persecuting Christians, he captured 23 Christian men who were hiding in caves and subjected them to many torments.
Before they confessed, Adrian asked them, “Brothers, why do you endure these unbearable and severe tortures?” They replied, “So that we may receive the blessings prepared by God for those who suffer for Him, which neither hearing nor speech can describe.”
Hearing this, the blessed Adrian humbled himself through divine grace and asked the scribes to write his name among the Christians, expressing his joy to die with them. After writing his name, they placed him in chains and imprisoned him.
Upon learning this, Natalia, his wife, fearing that he might have been imprisoned for another reason, was deeply distressed, weeping and sighing. Once informed that he had been bound for Christ, she immediately dressed in bright garments and hurried to the prison. There she encouraged him to remain steadfast under torture and prayed with the other saints imprisoned alongside him. Following Adrian’s counsel, Natalia then returned home.

Thus, when the saint was brought before the emperor and confessed Christ as the true God, they laid him face down and beat him with rods. Then, turning him face up, they struck him over the stomach so severely that his intestines were visible. The martyr was 28 years old at the time of these torments.

Afterward, the hands and feet of Saint Adrian and the other martyrs were cut off. As they met their holy end and their bodies were about to be consumed by fire, Natalia placed Saint Adrian’s hand on her bosom and, following the relics, collected the blood that fell from them, anointing herself with it. Then, when a heavy rain extinguished the fire, a faithful man named Eusebius took the martyrs’ relics, placed them in a small boat, and brought them to Arghiropolis, near Byzantium. Later, Natalia went there, gave her soul to God, and was buried beside the martyred relics.
