Epigonation embroidered with the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel
Archangel Michael, the preeminent chief over the ranks of the incorporeal powers, has revealed the grace of the Gospel both in the Old and the New Law and has performed many acts of goodness for humankind. For when the envious adversary of our salvation exalted himself and proudly said against his Creator, “I will set my throne above the clouds” and boasted, “I will be like the Most High,” he fell from the honor of an archangel, as the Lord says, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.” Likewise, the host under him, seeking to exalt themselves, also fell.
This ever-praised Michael, faithfully guarding the faith toward the Lord and showing great diligence for our race, was appointed by Almighty God to be chief over the understanding hosts. Seeing the fallen adversary, he gathered the angelic hosts and declared: “Let us take heed and praise the Lord of all,” as if to say: let us, the created beings, observe what has befallen those who were once light but have now become darkness.
For this reason, such a gathering is called the Synaxis of the Angels, meaning attention, understanding, and unity. This great benefactor of our salvation, multiplying and extending many acts of goodness for the salvation of many, has appeared visibly to many. He appeared to Abraham and Lot at the destruction of Sodom; to Jacob when he fled from his brother; he went before the camp of the children of Israel as they were delivered from the bondage and torment of Egypt; he appeared to Balaam when he went to curse Israel; and he spoke to Joshua son of Nun when Joshua asked, “I am the chief commander of the Lord’s hosts; now I have come.” He also calmed the rivers that had overflowed from the pagans over the holy places of worship. Many other acts of his are recounted in Holy Scripture.
Therefore, with him as our helper and protector of life, we celebrate today his most honored feast. Together with Archangel Michael, we also honor the most beautiful and joyful Archangel Gabriel. Gabriel performed many deeds of goodness for humankind, both under the Old and the New Law. In the prophecy of Daniel, his name is mentioned when he interprets Daniel’s vision concerning the kings of the Medes, Persians, and Greeks: “Gabriel,” he says, “make this man (Daniel) understand the vision” (Daniel 8:16). Again, Gabriel showed Daniel that after seventy weeks of years, that is, after four hundred ninety-seven years, Christ would come. “And behold,” says Gabriel, “the man I was seen flying at the beginning of the vision touched me at the hour of the evening sacrifice, and made me understand the rest” (Daniel 9:21).
This same Gabriel announced to Manoah’s wife that she would bear Samson, and he announced to Joachim and Anna that they would bear the Lady and Mistress of God, the Theotokos.
In the New Testament, he (Gabriel) announced to Zechariah, standing at the right side of the altar of incense, that he would father the great John the Forerunner. He also nourished the ever-virgin Mary for twelve years inside the Holy of Holies with heavenly food. Gabriel himself, and who could doubt it, announced to the Theotokos that she would bear from the Holy Spirit the Son and Word of God. He appeared to Joseph in a dream, as many say, telling him not to fear but to take Mary as his wife, for that which was conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. He also appeared to the shepherds, proclaiming that Christ, the Savior of the world, was born. In a dream, he told Joseph to take the child and his mother and flee into Egypt, and later instructed him to return to the land of Israel.
Many holy teachers and hymnographers believe that the divine Gabriel was also the angel in white robes who descended from heaven, rolled away the stone from the tomb of Jesus the Life-Giver, and sat upon it. He was the one who announced the Lord’s resurrection to the Myrrh-bearing Women. In summary, the divine Gabriel served in the economy of the mystery of the Incarnation of the Word of God from beginning to end.
For this reason and the Church of Christ celebrates him together with Archangel Michael, invoking their grace and assistance, praying that through their help and prayers, we may find deliverance from evils in this present age and, in the age to come, be deemed worthy of heavenly joy and the Kingdom. Amen.
