The Apostles Peter and Paul are celebrated on the same day because they were both crucified in Rome, on the orders of Emperor Nero, Peter being crucified upside down and Paul having his head cut off. The relics of the Apostles Peter and Paul, according to the Sinaxarium, were placed together. Tradition recorded June 29 as the date of the martyrdom of Saints Peter and Paul. Newer research has established with some precision that Peter was crucified in 64 and Paul was beheaded in 67. Saints Peter and Paul are authors of epistles included by the Church among the canonical texts of the New Testament (Paul – 14; Peter – 2).
